History
How it all got started ... and why we keep on growing!
The Academic Vocational Charter Institute was established in 1999 as an educational alternative to traditional high school. Recognizing that every student learns differently, the founders of AVCI designed the program to be very different from the traditional high school. Our enrollment is selective and limited so that we can offer each student the individual attention he or she deserves.
The focus at the institute is to prepare students for a career and higher education following graduation. Students learn vocational skills in addition to completing academic requirements for a diploma. As such, students may acquire entry level skills for a job following graduation as well as inquiry into post secondary vocational/academic studies. Students are expected to attend school everyday, complete school assignments and behave in a responsible manner. We encourage and assist students to pursue after school jobs and interests.
The curriculum is designed to be interactive and provides the correct amount of scaffolding for our students to succeed. Although classes are structured and comprehensive, there is enough built-in flexibility and differentiation to accommodate students' diverse needs and curiosities.
All of the employees at the school are here for one reason: to provide all students with a meaningful education. We help students explore a variety of vocations. They learn what skills and education are required to be successful in a chosen field, as well as participate in internships and develop strategic goals for higher education. Our students begin their studies with an end in mind, knowing exactly what they need to study to break into the career they want. What's more, they will have an impressive list of professional contacts and references from their work experience.
